Your recipes are amazing and so unique. Tell us, what inspired you to start cooking?
Thank you! I spent so much time as a kid with my grandmothers, who were amazing cooks. One was my Italian grandma who made SUCH delicious Italian food. The other, I spent my summers with in Washington. She had her own garden, and made such wonderful fresh and comforting meals. She taught me to use a chef’s knife when I was just 10 years old. We would spend the summer days in her garden picking and cleaning green beans then cooking in the kitchen the rest of the day.
Give us some behind the scenes of Master Chef? What was is like?
I was so scared to sign up for Master Chef, that I almost didn’t even show up to the audition! My family was very encouraging and because of them I went to the audition here in San Diego. From start to finish the process was life changing. Everyday I grew more and more. I would say that if your interested in following a dream, JUST DO IT! You may be scared but it is the scariest times in your life that you do the most growing and changing. Gordon Ramsey is one of the nicest and most professional people I have ever met, and it was an honor to serve him something I cooked. For my audition, I brought in Coconut Crusted Crab Cakes with Mango Salsa. For my episode that I was in I served San Diego Style Fish Tacos! The process of filming was so interesting.
You are one busy chef. How do you juggle it all?
I work at an elementary school. So I am with students all day helping out in classrooms all week. On Saturday morning I am in and out of grocery stores then I spend all day taking photos for @whats.krista.cooking on Instagram and developing recipes to share. It is a busy schedule, but I love being busy and love what I do.
As far as recipes that you have created, what is your favorite?
I love to grill! I make some Grilled Chicken Gyros that are filled with fresh veggies and a special dill sauce. I also love to make pasta! I make Chicken Parmesan Meatballs that are stuffed with mozzarella cheese and I serve them with Pasta covered in a Creamy Tomato Sauce and topped with tons of Parmesan cheese and fresh basil.
We are putting you on the spot! What did you cook last night?
Last night I made Honey Mustard Chicken. It is a very simple recipe, which is great for a busy day. Coat chicken with salt, pepper, garlic powder and pre-made honey mustard (I love Marie’s Brand Dressing) and bake it in the oven. I serve it with rice and salad. Easy, simple, and takes so little effort!
What is your favorite city in the world to eat in?
San Diego. I live here, and what is so great is that you can eat so well here without breaking the bank. 5 dollars will get you some of the best tacos you have ever had. The Marine Room in La Jolla is one of my favorite restaurants if your looking for fine dining with a creative twist. Every cuisine is represented so well here, and we have the best Mexican Food you can get! I lived in Las Vegas for a while, and there are some pretty awesome restaurants there. Bobby Flay’s Mesa Grill is excellent and there is a great little Spanish tapas place called Firefly that I HIGHLY recommend if you are visiting Vegas. (seriously, look up Firefly and go! So fun – So yummy)
Your favorite ingredient to cook with?
If you could cook for anyone, who would it be?
Emeril Lagasse, Bernard Guillas (The Marine Room) Bobby Flay, Chevy Chase, Norman Reedus (The Walking Dead) Jack Nicholson,Tom Hanks (that’s one heck of a dinner party)!
