The start of every season brings a new wave of sensations. With Winter breezing away her cold days, the joys of rays of sunshine basking our faces, cherry blossoms adorning our streets and sandal weather brings about very happy faces.
The first day of spring also symbolizes a new beginning, a new year for Iranians around the world as it is the first day of Norouz {Persian New Year}.
Persian New Year is a two-week long celebrating for Iranians around the globe. There’s a beauty that comes from its celebration and we’re sharing with you something called a Sofreh Hafsin which is basically a table scape filled with items that symbolize good wishes and fortunes. The Sofreh we’ve put together combines modern and traditional elements but lends itself more to the modern side, a new and different play on the table scape.
A traditional Sofreh Hafsin table scape holds 7 items that all begin with the word sin {s}.
1. Sabzi: wheatgrass/lentil sprouts that represent rebirth
2. Samanu: a sweet pudding representing affluence
3. Senjed: dried oleaster wild olive fruit representing love
4. Seer: garlic, representing medicine
5. Seeb: apples, symbolizing health and beauty
6. Somäq {sumac}: symbolizing the color of sunshine
7. Serkeh {vinegar}: symbolizing old age and patience
Along with these traditional elements, we also place mirrors, hyacinths or tulips, colored eggs, gold coins, sweets and the book of Hafiz, a poetry book by the mystical Iranian poet Hafiz.
Norouz is about celebrating family, friends, a culture rich in history and most importantly, a new year. We share with you a small part of its celebration and hope that you are able to one day experience the beauty behind this culture-rich custom.
