As a travel blogger I am always exploring bustling cities, looking for beautiful locations to photograph and architecture to be inspired by. However, it is often the hidden gems in quieter country towns that blow me away with their natural beauty and relaxed atmosphere. In my recent travels I came across a tranquil setting for tired travellers, just an hour and a half outside of Sydney’s CBD. Milton Park Country House, once a playground for Sydney’s elite, is a French-inspired villa that offers the chance to visit a country garden that will transport you to Europe in no time. Whether you are looking for an escape closer to home or plan to head down under, here’s why a country escape is the perfect way to break up your busy schedule.
Nothing beats the warmth and love that you get from country cooking, especially when the restaurant draws on influences from English and French cooking. High Tea is always on offer as well as other country favourites like Devonshire tea and French onion soup. It is the perfect opportunity to try local produce and avoid the fast food that seems to linger around tourist attractions.
When you are outside of the city you find yourself in a much more serene, tranquil space. It’s the perfect time to rejuvenate feet that are weary from travelling or treat your skin to some moisture that has been depleted from in-flight air conditioning. This particular spa at Milton Park offers luxurious products from PAYOT, which were first developed in Paris, how perfect.
Only in the country do you get enough room to explore fields of roses and mossy trails all day long. Ponds, waterfalls and beautiful wisteria make the perfect backdrop for a picnic or walk with your travel companion. It was nothing short of inspiring and I made a mental note to contact Proactive Landscaping as soon as I got home, to organize a consultation and see what they could do with my garden. I’d love to have somewhere this beautiful to spend time in. Getting out in to the fresh air can be a welcomed change from cramped museums and public transport during your trip. When I am travelling I also like to buy fresh produce from the local markets and enjoy it on a picnic blanket in a nearby park.
The further you head from the city the larger room sizes tend to get. Anyone who has stayed in a hotel room in Paris will know this! From four-poster beds to spa baths and balconies, country suites have enough room to host you for a longer stay or provide a little taste of luxury during a quick stopover. With more amenities than most hotel rooms I like to use locations like these as an opportunity to wash and dry my laundry to get me through the rest of the trip.
Bust out that maxi skirt and fedora. The great thing about grand estates is that you can never be overdressed. Plus, you get to wear pretty pieces that just aren’t practical when you’re hitting the city streets. On my trip to Milton Park I wore a woven skirt and summery sandals that I wouldn’t have lasted a whole day of sightseeing in. Instead, I was able to soak up some sun (and French wine) in style.
When you are planning your next trip remember that it is often the unassuming towns outside of the city that will allow you to immerse yourself in the local culture and take some time out from your busy itinerary.
